The UnLegend Of SideWaysSleepingBeauty~

The UnLegend Of SideWaysSleepingBeauty~

A Poem by NoneOfYourBusiness akaKITTY KUTABAREakaCandyPole

Would you believe

it happened in Michigan of all the Underlands?

The toddler was a pea pod pixie of a pollen dream

though she was very clever in her human disguise

bouncing upon mother’s knee

as the Carnival unfurled its curtains

looking properly affrighted as all wee ones should

at the approach of massive elephants

wearing Dixie cup hats

sporting rambunctious clowns on their backs;

she could barely contain the glitter inside her cheeks

that tickled to explode

with laughter

but, as I said, she was clever

and managed to suck the sparklies down into her abdomen

where they turned into butterflies

whispering universal truths along her neural pathways

with fluttering wings

Still don’t believe

it happened in Michigan, Brighton, to be exact?

Elephant one, who detested being named Wally

saw the magik girl instantly

and much to the protestations of the clown he unceremoniously

tossed into a pool of pink poodles doing somersaults

ambled up to her

and trunk to nose, said

“I give you the gift of naming magik wherever your footsies take you.”’;

cross eyed pixie in intense focus

pulled Wally's ear

and whispered sideways around the bend of everydays

so only he could hear her

“I name you Dumbo.”

and sent the newly christened Dumbo off to Disney Land

Michigan is a magik place, I tell you

with fairies sprouting all over the place

Next came the saddest clown of all the Underlands

who had foolishly dropped out of High School

to invest more time in his meth lab

unfortunately

enchanted places don’t go for that kind of nonsense

and pushed a police cruiser off a side road

straight into the sad clown’s druggie tent

spoiling a few thousand dollars worth of truly hard labor

and all the saddest clown got was two years in a juvenile detention center

and afterwards,  a job with the Carnival;

well, the saddest clown, in quite an impressive handstand, palmed up to magik girl

and spoke thusly

“I give you the gift of mending broken people.”

and again she bent the atoms in the air

to make their own private bubble, and said

“Poof, you are Charlie Sheen!”

and sent him off to some good years

and a wicked scandal

neither could see just yet

Brighton hiccupped the day she was born,

and the Underlands would never be the same

The finale!

the Carnival wrapped in Tom Waits music

cymbals, drums, gravelly conductor crooning

a raven on his top hat, announcing

Her

the woman who spread red curtains aside

on fluted stilts

her bones whispered into the arena

twelve feet high

straight to pixelated pixie girl covered in pollen magik

low she bent from narrow waist

emerald eyes encased in feather lashes

sweeping, she sang

“I give you the gift of pouring ink

the gift of bleeding onyx

your words may one day bless the world

redraw it through harmonics

twiddle fingers

dipping quill

into the inkwell

of deep will.”

and then . . . .

the Kiss for SidewaysSleeping Beauty’s sparkly forehead

right on the lid of her third eye

awakening

the deepest Dreamer from a thousand year slumber

And, would you believe, it happened in Brighton, Michigan

of all the Underlands . . . .

Invitingly magical... the extraordinary origins of these special gifts is an unlegend so exceptional in the making... an exquisite tale that has lifted me out of the clamour of the mundane grinding itself towards evening. Who'd have thought... in one of the many Brighton's around the world?

I've read this several times. I just love the whole thing. So smart. So playful. A real-deal fairytale. Cheers!

Did you eve spend time with John Lennon? You certainly are the girl with kaleidoscope eyes. Bending color blending sound into a whirlwind of religion and magic....

Un-be-liev-able!!!! This is why you are the Goddess of the Unfairytales that unfurl in Underland. What magik to behold in the realm of realities and press it to parchment with fairy dust sprinkles and crystallized elephant trunks. I smiled and giggled the entire time I read this. I did not have to be there. You placed my feet in a rendition that was more than real to me. No one could dream up a reality and spread it across a scroll so beautifully.

I can honestly say this made me cry. It was exactly what happened with twists and turns of a magical experiance, that happened of so many moons ago. ;]
I was so awestruck when I saw this was about me...and inspired by me. I'm still holding a strong smile and a puddle of tears under my tiny dancing feet. "Mum! My favorite poet wrote a poem about me! Mum, Mum!"
Thank you so much!

As a Michigander, born and raised, I resemble that remark. And that one. No, not that one.

What a beautiful modern fairytale - it should be illustrated and in all the bookstores.
