Chapter-2

A Chapter by catwoman

Kate was awakened by the sound of her mother. She was asking her to wake up, She couldn't, for a minute, make out where she was, Then she slowly gained her senses and sat up slowly. She looked at the clock and saw that it was 6 a.m,

"Kate, are you getting up or not?" yelled her mother. Though it was frequently asked, it was not a question as no one could sleep when her mother wanted them awake, Gifted with a persistent sound of a very high frequency, he mother was not one who could be ignored.

She slowly got up and by this time her mother was already beating on her door, She walked slowly towards the door and opened it. Her mother was already dressed.

"Look, it's the first day of work and I need to get there fast. I know this is unfair, sweetie, but I really need to get there early and since we live in such a remote area, I've to start now. I know it's your first day of school and I really should come with you, but I am afraid I have to leave now, Mr Simmons, our driver will take you there. Get ready by 7.  Have a nice day." she said and kissed Kate on the cheek and left without waiting for  an answer.

Her mother was not one who never cared for those in her family, but recently she had become so engrossed in her work that she had little time for anything else. Her mother's departure increased her sense of loneliness. She was not one who felt the need to communicate a lot and yet she couldn't help but feel the need to talk with someone. She felt angry with her mother for not even bothering to understand her feelings or talk with her. She knew her mother alone could not be blamed for this because even as a child, she never talked about her feelings and her unreadable countenance made it even harder for people to know her deeply

She took a quick shower and got down to deciding what to wear. It was so cold outside and as she had lived in a warm place, her choices of clothing were limited. She finally decided on wearing a red turtle neck and jeans along with a black jacket. Her hair was ,as usual, an unmanageable mess and she tied it in a pony. Her makeup was limited to an eyeliner and an occasional use of lipstick.

She was not in anyway beautiful but she was attractive. She was a slim brunette of about 5'6. Her best feature was her beautiful dark eyes shielded by long thick lashes, which was the one feature she loved most. She wasn't very attentive to her appearance and always appeared as a tom boy,

She saw that it was about 7. She got her bag and walked down towards the car. It was very cold and she was relieved to get into the warmth of the car. The driver merely nodded and started the car. She stared out of the window and couldn't help but forget her worries ,of walking into a new school, in the beauty of the surroundings. Though, what she saw was limited to snow and trees, she couldn't help but love it.

It was difficult to navigate the car through the dense snow and by the time they got to the school, it was already 8 and the bell had already rang. Kate hurried out of the car. She was late for her first day in the new school. She didn't know where to go. She walked about aimlessly, feeling self-conscious when suddenly she ran into Mr Sinclair. He looked at her kindly and said

"Late for the first day of school are we. That is your class room he said pointing towards a room."

"Thank you"she said and gave him a gracious smile and hurried towards her class.

When she entered the class room, all eyes watched her every moment. She just wanted to sink to the ground and to add to the embarrassment, the teacher asked her to introduce herself, She stammered her name and when the teacher saw that she had nothing more to add, she directed her towards a seat.

Her first day at school was horrible. No one really bothered to talk to her and she left to her own company even during lunch. The one time anyone talked to her was to mock her clothing. She was thankful when the first bell rang and rushed out of school. She got hurriedly into the car.

Once home, she collapsed onto the bed. She hated her life. She had no one to talk to and she had to live in this horrible place for a year. She closed her eyes and soon drifted off to sleep, haunted by the unfriendly faces at school.
