Five

Five

A Poem by Alexandra
"

Five was the magic number

"

Five.

Five was the magic number.

Five more minutes in bed with you

Five kisses before I could leave the apartment

Five miles I drove away from you

the first night that I stayed there

Five days before you asked me to

move into that apartment with you

And five movies we watched on repeat

Five months that we knew each other

before you told me that you loved me

And five minutes we sat in silence

before I said I loved you, too

Five rehab stints I drove you to

But only four that I picked you up

Five days that I waited for you to call

Five days that I called in sick to work

after they told me you didn't want me

Five days I didn't leave my bed

Five Xanax just to calm me down

that first night I spent alone

Then five beers the days that followed

Five cups of coffee in the morning

To chase the five hours of sleep I barely got

Five dates I went on

With five different men

But none of them felt a thing like you

Five hours alone in the hospital

The night I drank too much

and tried to drive you away from my mind on the freeway

Five messages I sent over the course of 8 weeks

Before I realized you weren't going to read them

It's been five months and I still read your horoscopes

Five months and I still reach for you

Five months and I still taste your name on my tongue

Five.

Five is the magic number.

How many fives before I get you out of my head?

Five verses to recount two lives, with one now missing. The thoughts, the questions unanswered, the waking alone feeling like a lost limb, so much goes into a life together, yet so little can destroy it.
Poignant, reflective words from the heart, well written. Thank you for sharing.

I feel you! my magic number is six, and you probably see the number everywhere...I know I did!
