The Speculum is Broken

The Speculum is Broken

A Poem by Michael G. Smith
"

Chasing Youth

"

Speculum is broken

An empty space upon a wall

Once here beauty cast

Skin deep yet, upon tis facet whole

Life ne' er be perfect

More as pendulum slows

Looking glasses merely mirror

And magnify flaws hundredfold

Your writing style is something I really have to give you props for. It makes for a really thoughtful and beautiful read

The idea of something so rundown with such a suffering beneath, is a heartbreaking concept. Beautiful job.

Thank you Mikayla. I love your name it sounds so beautiful.
this has that feel of the early american poetry...but talks of how we become slaves to our aging selves...
beauty comes and goes, and sadness comes as we go through that doorway of aging...and the hearts age too...we bleed...
but as that one song says "you bleed just to know you're alive"

dying is living and vice-versa...

really like this write and where it took me.

Michael, I love this poem. It is soulful and heartfelt. Timeless and beautiful. The stanza that got me to my throat is this one.."Within a crawl; inverse to a blind
Sadness revealing to myriad souls
Hidden agendas of perception
As slave been sold"... oh, so poignant and beautiful....It makes me wish it were longer so I could keep reading. Excellent, my friend.

Thanks Rita.
The use of the word speculum is both interesting and quite unusual in the context in which I see these lines; but it works. There is an acceptance that no matter what, the clock ticks and we are forever bound to only reflect on those things we have never seen or experienced, and that we cannot go back and experience those might have been's.

Life is a race that can be run, but seldom won.

Beccy.

Thanks Briana. Aging is the one thing we can't escape.
Evermore the speculum is broken
Be it; doorway or keyhole
Once here beauty cast’d
Skin deep but yet, on this facet whole

A race that cannot be run … exquisite penning:)

It's good to see you again Michael.
This piece touches on those human emotions we all feel at times but once we accept the natural course of things we'll find a different sort of beauty.
