Where Were You and I

Where Were You and I

A Story by Michael G. Smith
"

Reflective thoughts from my last marriage.

"

Overheard hidden birds chirping

I stopped to capture what serenity could

To ponder and write this poetry

Perhaps, learn a little more about our love

The melody was one of gaiety

Made me deepen thought and wonder

Where were you and I

Up till now it seems, the same old song, over and over

I know those lovebirds somewhere

Among the green palette leaves

But, where were you and I, back I inquired

Further still within myself, I and me

The birds held something

To each other they could sing

What did we have or hold

Was there really anything

Messages; their unexpected songs

Soothed a soul rubbed raw

You and I, I'm not so sure

If we could ever be, one again at all

Thoughts stuck like mud in the moment

But, sparrows did take quick flight

Where were you and I

When they were gone, well out of sight

I put the pen down and the car into drive

And headed on, a little bit further

Trying to see us inside of nature

I've searched meadow and hollow and still I find no answer

Where were you and I

Now, in these separate lives

It's always healthy to have these moments of reflection. We learn from them and become better people through understanding. Good write.

You can call me Ana if you want.
Anče is pronounced Ahn-chay.
Means little Ana.
Reflective indeed. The wistful tone of this piece is endearing and charming.

Thanks Blue, it means a lot coming from you. Hey, that rhymes.
This is so beautiful! Only an expert at words and life could take something like this and add the colors of life you have incorporated. Great job! :)

You did a fantastic job! :)
One of the best poems I've read in awhile. It has a sincerity about it. I can really feel your anguish of wanting to love somebody you just cannot. I think this happens to many of us, getting involved with someone out of situation and not necessarily because we have that deep connection that we should try to look for before committing to something that should have more meaning. I like how you incorporated the birds around you and brought them into the comparisons. Truly an excellent write.

Thanks, I also.
There are never any good answers to why love dies and relationships wither, everything is constantly changing, and sometimes not for the better. I really like this reflective piece M.G.

truth in poetry is it this holds the quiet pain of alone just beneath the surface, the song of the birds is the light that requests the shadow be seen

When we love someone its not just the person, its also about the time. Those moments must be cherished for their beauty still shining in our memories.
I love to repeat these lines from Winnie the Pooh when those memories come to haunt me...
" Don't feel bad that it got over, Feel happy that it happened".

Or in other words Avinash, it's better to love and lost then to never loved at all, thanks.
In the shamanic tradition, nature can at times give you the answers you seek. The rub comes in the interpretation. Might be easier to sing your song. Beautiful, beautiful write.
