The Child Sails Out to Sea

The Child Sails Out to Sea

A Poem by Michael G. Smith
"

Growning up

"

A fireball on horizons dies
The child sails himself out to sea

Upon a rocky shore
A man is left standing

Staring off across a bay

Of boyhood dreams

Kept within, is the innocence
The reaching out and waving

But, turns instead

To face the years

And embrace his new responsibilities

There is a series of painting by artist Thomas Cole called "Voyage of Life" - we have copies in our living room - they take a man through his existence, imagining that life is a sea voyage. He is never alone in his boat, though... I read your poem, and these paintings came to mind...

Thanks Mike. It sails back many times to see me.
I remember when I 'sailed out to sea'. A mere 6 years ago, I think. Seems so long ago but I still feel it as yesterday. Its daunting, venturing out into the wide world, responsibilities seem so heavy at first, and only get heavier as work and pressures of relationships builds. Yet to embrace the adversity that life throws at you is to assert yourself as a person, a member of society, and a part of the human race.

Thanks for sharing
