Chapter 5

Chapter 5

A Chapter by Sean H.

“There was an explosion about a day and a half ago. We weren’t told much about it. They said to just kill anyone we found, no survivors. They said we couldn’t afford to let this get out.”
Brock threw a hard punch to the side of the man’s head. “Who the hell are you working for?” The man mumbled something that Brock couldn’t hear. “What? Speak up, d****t! Who the hell sent you?” he demanded.
The man hesitated for a moment. “We’re… We’re sent by a government agency. I can’t say anything else. They’ll kill me.”
Brock removed the knife from the man’s neck and slammed his face into the ground. “You don’t need to worry ‘bout that. I’m gonna kill you anyway, a*****e,” he informed the agent.
The agent began worriedly shaking his head, not able to move far with his hair still clenched in Brock’s fist. “We’re security. We clean up messes. Hide them from the public.”
“What? So you clean it up when the government takes a s**t?” Brock demanded, getting angrier by the minute. “You’re trying to kill a child, for God sakes. What’s the matter with you? Got no damn morals at all?” Brock slammed the agent’s face into the ground a third time. Blood ran down his nose. “Who are you?” Brock screamed.
“Alec! Please, don’t hurt me anymore! I was just doing my job, just following orders! I took an oath to do anything they said. Breaking that oath is punishable by death!” the man pleaded. “I’m sorry!”
“God only knows how many people you’ve killed already! This is too late for sorry! You don’t deserve to live!” Brock pulled out his pistol and pushed the barrel up to the agent’s head. The man was shaking, begging for mercy, his life. Brock didn’t care. He pulled the trigger. The bullet went into one side of the man’s head and exploded with blood and brains out the other. His body went limp, his cries stopped.
Brock looked back up to where he had left Abby standing. He had forgotten about her, caught up in his fury. She was no longer there. “Abby!” he called out. “Abby where did you go?” Brock jumped to his feet and dashed down the hallway, checking in each and every room for the little girl. She was nowhere to be found. Brock fell to his knees. Abby had become his hope, his reason to get out, along with his company, and friend. I’ve got to find her! Where would she go?
Brock expected that she might go back to places she’d been before. He first looked in the room where they had found the map. He looked behind the white board and under the table. There was no where else. She wasn’t there. Next, he ran back to the office they’d stayed the night in. “Where’s Abby?“ he asked the room, as if it would answer him.
A giggle came from the corner. There Abby sat, giggling and smiling at the sight of Brock. He ran over to her, knelt down, and picked her up. “Abby! I was worried! I told you to stay where you were! It’s dangerous here!” He threw his arms around the little girl. “Don’t roam off like that.”
“I’m sowwy,” she responded, unable to form the ‘r’.
Brock put her on his shoulders as he had when he’d first found her. He carried her back to where they had been when the men found them. Just down the hall Brock could see light coming from outside. “Look Abby! That must be the door out!” He ran down to the light. It was a door. He pushed it open. “Duck your head, okay?” He checked to make sure she did, then went through the door.
He had stepped into a courtyard. There was a fountain in the middle with stone paths leading up to it from all four sides. Benches sat around the path. But it wasn’t a way out. Surrounding the court yard was just doors to other wings of the building. “Damn,” Brock swore under his breath. “Well, Abby, it doesn’t seem like this is a way out after all.
