The Adult Child Song

The Adult Child Song

A Poem by Sam Dugan
"

The song I only sang in my head until I gained my voice.

"
Make me sing the one about your silence........
the silence that occupied every room we shared......
the one that reminded me of my powerlessness.......

Make me sing the one about the letters............
the ones I wrote and slipped under your door....
the ones where I begged to be forgiven.........

Make me sing the one about confusion..........
the confusion that invalidated my feelings......
the one that always made me feel dirty..........

Make me sing the one about enlightenment......
the enlightenment that helped me see your faults......
the one that made me feel less like a child.......

Make me sing the one about how I fought back.........
the retaliation that came from seeing red...........
the one that turned guilt into anger.............

Make me sing the one about adulthood.......
the adulthood that forced me out of ignorance......
to see that even when I was a child, I was an adult....

That you, in fact, were the child all along.

Shall I sing it again?

The child in us travels along throughout the years and this gives a voice and a thought to its existence. Thanks for sharing.
