"Damaged Goods Never Look Good to New Buyers"

"Damaged Goods Never Look Good to New Buyers"

A Poem by realmwriter
"

I am borrowing this as a title from J Todd Underhill. It is not a title from him that I know of but it is a quote from a review of his to a poem by swapz747 titled "Long Gone."

"
Broken, belittled, diminished,  disturbed
Take it or leave it, I am Damaged Goods.
New Buyers will pass, on my roughened exterior
Because I, am Damaged Goods.

A buyer looking for a new car,
doesn't go to a used car lot.
Nobody wants to live in the basement,
of a house someone else is renting.

Chewed on like a dog toy,
road wet and put away
I'm an old dog in new hay.
Because I, am Damaged Goods.

The years have not been kind
and the road ahead is dead.
The journey has been adventurous
but the the adventure has taken its tole.

I may have a few miles on the tires
but my feet still get me where I need to go.
Still I don't catch New Buyers eyes,
Because I, am Damaged Goods.

Damaged goods
Don't look good to new buyers
But new buyers
Still look good to Damaged Goods.

Good write Realm... the fractured ego.. the wounded soul and feeling beyond repair and not being able to see that everyone is damaged goods... we often look good on the outside, or others do to us...but we all carry the duality of dignity and depravity... Wonderful reflecting my friend.,.. take heart and keep penning, great! :)

You are a very good poet indeed. I like the imagery conjured by this piece, and the perspective from which you have chosen to write the poem.

The first stanza was my favorite. It really set the tone for this poem. I noticed you switched between capitalizing 'Damaged Goods' and having it lower cased. I would suggest keeping it 'Damaged Goods' with the capitals because it makes it sound more powerful, like it's relating this trodden down thing to a person. That's my suggestion, anyway, but I really liked this poem. It has a good rawness to it.

You have a knack for this.

New buyers definitely look good to what appears to be damaged goods. Sometimes what appears damaged on the outside is incredibly beautiful on the inside and sometimes what appears beautiful on the outside and oh so perfect is actually ugly and dark on the inside.......a buyer may find themselves surprised. Wonderful piece.

Nice imagery and the theme :-)

This reminds me of something that I figured out a while ago that it takes a person who is broken or has been broken to love someone who is broken because, it requires understanding, immense compassion, and a taste for the darkness. How else will they think that they are completely beautiful? A person who can appreciate everything about you even your hauntings. Fantastic poem, I love it especially this line; "Nobody wants to live in the basement, of a house someone else is renting."
