Fragile Thing

Fragile Thing

A Poem by Scott A. Williams
"

From class, early 2008, struggled for years with the last two lines.

"

Oh, that girl
such a fragile thing.
She was put together
with glue and string.

I had to lean close
to make sure she was there --
stamped with a notice
“Handle with Care.”

And every time
she lost a piece,
she put it back
or tried, at least.
But she couldn’t hide
the cracks and chips
of broken hearts
and lying lips.

If there’s one crime I committed,
just one little sin,
I didn’t know she was broken
when I set to begin.

And now that she’s gone,
it seems like such a curse:
those flaws she found in me
are only getting worse

Rhyming is difficult to pull off. You pulled it off. Not sing-song, trite, or cliche.
