Mail Man

Mail Man

A Poem by Sarah J Dhue

The mail never came

I checked every day

For a month

Creaking open the heavy

Metal iron door

Of the mail chute

But nothing

Eventually, I never left

I sat beneath

That dark metal box

I waited

I slept

But still the mail never came

I watched an ant creep

Across the carpeted floor

Saw his determination

To complete his task

The AC rattled

Still I sat there

The male never came

Sun shone through the beautiful

Art glass windows

When they found me

Eyes sunken and tongue dry

Cold and stiff

With mucus crystals

Collected around my nostrils

They took my body

But I never left

a nicely haunted visage... and I did catch that the "male" never came either...
