Kites

Kites

A Story by Sarah J Dhue
"

This has been a love story.

"
Two kites soared in the March sky, the wind causing them to swoop, their tails billowing majestically.  One was bright blue with spots of pink and red dotting the surface.  The other was striped orange, green, and white.  As the wind picked up, their strings became tangled and their flyers had to reel them in and untangle them before releasing them back into the sky to fly.
Every year for 15 years these two kites could be seen soaring in the sky, becoming entwined like their two flyers.
Then on the 20th year, a third smaller kite joined the two.  And by the 23rd year, there were three kites of the same size, a rainbow patterned one joining the pair.  So it was for another 12 years.  Then, only two kites once again soared on the March winds.
Until one day, on the 67th year, only one kite careened in the sky, swooping but failing to become ensnared on anything.
On the 71st year, the sky was clear, devoid of any kites.
Until one day, the third rainbow kite returned, accompanied by a new grey and yellow kite.
