'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' sneak peekA Story by Sarah J DhueA sneak peek from my book-in-progress, 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'The road dead ended and Jackson could see a small
path leading into the woods on his right.
The car rolled to a stop and Jackson climbed out, but Tess hesitated. “You coming?”
He leaned back into the car. “Yeah… it’s just that this place always has creeped
me out.” She slowly climbed out of the
car and started down the path, overgrown with weeds. “Follow me.”
They walked into the dense cover of trees in all of the beautiful shades
of autumn: flaxen yellow, rusty orange, crimson red, and a few still retaining
their dark emerald green hue. The
further they went, the less sunlight shown through the trees. Jackson could see why this place could creep
someone out. “Here.” Tess walked into a small clearing. The area was still heavily shaded, but more
light managed to leak through the leaves.
A large tree stood in the middle of the clearing, towering above the
rest. As they drew nearer, Jackson could
see something was carved into the tree. The words were so worn down after centuries that
Jackson could barely read them. ‘Here
lies Sven, stricken down too soon. May
he rest in peace. -1786’ Jackson stepped
back and heard something snap under his foot.
He looked down to see a skeletal foot jutting out of the dirt. He cried out, jumping back. © 2015 Sarah J DhueAuthor's Note
