Writer Wednesday #5: Stranger in a Sinister Town

A Story by Sarah J Dhue

On my blog, I am doing a new 'event' called Writer Wednesdays. I post a prompt and others(including me) write something based on that prompt.

When I walked through the gates of Hillsbury, I had a strange feeling.  The village seemed quaint enough, but the residents’ eyes held secrets I could never hope to uncover.  Nor did I want to.  I have found that most times, when people are guarded, they are for a good reason.  Dig too deeply and soon they may be digging a six-foot hole for you.

I could not help but notice that there were no children playing outside.  It was a rather cloudy, dreary day, but so were most days in these parts and it just struck me as strange.  When I asked a man sitting on the side of the street if all the children were in school, he looked at me like I had lost my mind and pointed up the street, clearing his throat.

I walked further down the street to discover an old schoolhouse in ruin; it would appear that no one had used it for many years, perhaps even decades.  This disturbed me in a way I cannot describe… I only knew I felt that I should leave Hillsbury, but I had serious business to attend to.  I told myself I would carry this business out as quickly as possible, and leave the dreary town and ruined schoolhouse behind me forever.
