Writer Wednesday #3: Old House

On my blog, I am doing a new 'event' called Writer Wednesdays. I post a prompt and others(including me) write something based on that prompt.

            At first, I had thought it was just mice.  All old houses have a few mice.  But it persisted, mousetrap after empty mousetrap… three exterminators, and they found nothing, not a single dropping let alone a mouse.  But the sounds persisted… birds in the rafters maybe?  I checked, but once again, nothing; no droppings, feathers, nest.  As I lie in my bed at night, I began to really scrutinize the sounds.  I now could tell the sounds were being made by something heavier than mice and birds… but what?  I knew there was no one else in the house, if we had not found something as small as a mouse or bird, you would think we’d have noticed a whole person for Christ sake!

            The sounds continued to persist, starting to drive me out of my own mind… and then, just last night, the damn shower started all by itself.  I am not making this up, I swear, the shower started up, running hot water and everything.  I even found a few soap suds collected around the drain.  Maybe there is someone else here… but wouldn’t I have found them by now, searching the house from top to bottom both on my own and with the three exterminators?

            Damn cat got stuck up in the attic… let it out, hoping it was the source of the forsaken sounds, but I think I knew better.  The shower started again tonight, this time followed by the flushing of the toilet.  The thought had crossed my mind once in the beginning, but I had pushed it away as silly.  But now I was nearly certain; my house was haunted.  And my water bill was getting run up by a damn ghost.  Well, I won’t be having any of that… tomorrow I will call up the psychic I saw an ad for in the paper and get this nuisance to leave.  It’s my house now.
