'Nightfall In Louisiana' sneak peekA Story by Sarah J Dhuea sneak peek to my short story 'Nightfall In Louisiana'Mason suddenly felt all the air knocked out of him and fell to
the ground, instinctively grabbing his stomach. “Didn’t see that coming, did you?” a
mocking voice said and Mason looked up to see two pairs of dirty sneakers
flanking him. He cried out as one kicked
him hard in the side and he realized Jane had stopped screaming. The two men grabbed his arms, pulling him up,
and the man with Jane came into view. He
had a gun to her temple and she was crying silently; even from where Mason
stood he could see she was shaking all over. “Let her go!” he pulled at his captors and
they just laughed. The man holding the gun sneered and then
pocketed the gun, “Come on, before somebody sees us.” Mason and Jane’s captors dragged them into
the alley past the fallen trashcan and eventually shoved them through the back
door of what appeared to be an abandoned warehouse. As the door closed behind them, Mason heard
the lock click and a chill ran down his spine.
They walked into the center of the room; a hole in the ceiling let
moonlight leak in, the only light in the room.
Crates and boxes were scattered about the room and a derelict forklift
sat to one side. There was a movement among some of the
crates and a man emerged into the moonlight.
He was tall, dressed all in black with black hair, contrasted by bone
white skin. The moon reflected off his
intensely pale blue eyes. “Good job,
boys,” he looked between the three thugs, “And they’re young. Even better.” Mason saw him eyeing Jane and began
fighting the two men holding him until one kicked him hard in the shin, causing
him to collapse, only being held up by their grasp on his arms. The man’s eyes shifted to the one holding
Jane and he nodded, the man bringing Jane up to him and then retreating to
where Mason and the others stood. The man circled Jane, looking her up and
down, “So pretty,” he pulled her chin up so that she was looking into his eyes. She was perspiring and shaking all over,
fighting tears, “What do you want from us?” the first tear fell, “We don’t have
any money.” “Well that’s alright,” he put his arm
around her shoulders and knelt, holding her like a dancer, “I don’t want money.” Her lip quivered and he slowly stood, holding
her in the same position, “What I want is right here,” he continued to gaze
into her eyes and she stopped shaking, frozen in fear, “Don’t worry; it’ll only
hurt for a moment.” He looked up into the moonlight and opened
his mouth and Mason felt his stomach lurch as he saw his canines extending and
his brow growing more pronounced. His
eyes came open and he looked down at Jane and she stared back at him,
wide-eyed. Then he sunk his fangs into her exposed throat. © 2013 Sarah J DhueAuthor's Note
