Besides being "a many splendored thing," love can indeed be a terrible thing, if it's allowed to be. It is, as the poet notes, "uncharted territory," a state where the safety of control can be absent. It can bring to the surface both our best and worst qualities, of which the poet seems to be aware, given the caveat offered in the last verse. All I can say is good luck.
