Chapter 1 (part 2)

Continuing Ember's story

"

Later that night, Ember's question was answered.  She was in the kitchen helping Lucy, their cook, make supper for five, when the guests arrived.

When the meal was prepared, Lucy asked Ember to serve.  She was not prepared for what would happen next.

Lucy opened the double doors to the dining room, and announced the meal.  Ember followed, carying two trays.  Without knowing it, she had caught the eye of a youg man there.  He leaned close to Ember's father.

"Who is that lovely young lady carrying our food?" he asked.

"My daughter, Ember.  Would you like to meet her?"  The young man nodded.  "Ember, come over here when you are done," he said.

"And if I say no?" Ember asked.

Her father cleared his throat.  "When you are done," he said, "you will join me over here.  Is that understood?"

Ember looked her father in the eye and nodded, but refused to say anything in return.  Turning on her heel, she returned to serving the meal.

Her father looked at the young man adn smiled at the look on his face.  "That's what happens when a girl is raised from the age of five by her father and a cook.  If you treat her in what she considers the 'wrong' way, she'll let you know.  When she sits down to eat, would you care to help me change that?"

The young man grinned and nodded.

A few minutes later, Ember joined them.

"What do you want?" she asked.

"Where did you disappear to after serving?  And lose your attitude.  I am your father, and you, you're just a girl."

"Just a girl?!  JUST a gril?!  And as for my attitude, who taught it to me?  Who told me to-"

"Enough!" her father bellowed.  "You will show respect to your elders, of which I happen to be included!"

Ember glared at him.  "Why are you acting like this?  What's gotten into you?  Is it because you want your guests to think you have raised me 'properly', and not as you would the son you wanted?"

"Silence!  How dare you speak to your father that way?  Insolent little b***h!  He has raised you since your mother died, and you treat him like this?  I can see now why he wants you gone!"

Ember turned to the speaker and glared at him.

"Your name, sir, so when you are dead, I can proudly say I did it," she spat.  To her father she said, "You dare to bring this filth into MY house, dirty MY dishes, then instigate ME to anger, and then say it's all my fault?!  How dare you!"

"I think the girl needs to come with me.  I will teach her to obey," said the young man.  To Ember he said, "My name is John, son of the most ruthless pirate in the area.  Your father is my father's first mate, Ember.  Deal with it."

Ember gasped.  "No.  I beg of you!  Watch your tongue!  There's women in your presence!"

"What women do you speak of?  The only thing I see is a mangy b***h that needs to be tamed.  Sir, allow me to tame your shrew."

Ember's father was beginning to look uncomfortable.  He hadn't expected this much damage done and now his precious daughter knew his terrible secret, the same secret he had kept from her mother.  The very same secret that had killed her.  He glanced at Ember, who stood up and announced, "I'm leaving now.  I bid you all a horrendous night."  Then she turned and ran from the room, the laughter of the men at the table chasing at after her.

Anything and everything goes. I know there are probably a lot of grammatical errors here. Also, I still need help with a title for the book itself and for the chapter...chapter 2 will be coming soon.

Ember is working out really well...perhaps you should just use her name as a title.
