Daily Dream 09-09-2016 Repeat as NeededA Chapter by Sargon DorsaiWrong. Do it again. Everything vanished in a blinding flash. When I could see again I was back at the beginning of the facility, looking in through the door. The familiar weight of my sniper rifle pulled at my arms and my gear clung to me like a second skin. Darting through the door, I immediately dove towards the shadows. A quick scan of the area revealed no bodies. Just like last time. Last time? Why was I here? Again? I inched my way along the wall, sticking to the darkness, my suit blending with the surroundings as I moved. The creaking of leather caught my attention as a security guard rounded the corner. A swift rifle butt to the back of the head dropped the guard and I dragged him back into the shadows. Just like last time. How was I here again? I’d already failed this mission. Failed to find my target. Died to a dropped grenade of all things. I pushed those thoughts aside as I crept up the stairway. If I remembered correctly… there! The next guard walked into view and a quick shot took him in the head as well, dropping him into a crumpled heap at the top of the stairs. Stepping over the body, I confirmed that it was the same one I’d dealt with last time. More actions. All the same. All the same. How was that possible? There was the guard with the grenade. Instead of sneaking up to him and knocking him out, I took the shot from down the corridor. The grenade dropped, exploded, and alerted the other guards. I was always gone by then, leaping up to another stairway and tucking myself into a crevice as guards streamed past me. Crawling further up the stairs, I bypassed several more guards that had managed to ignore the instinct to rush towards the sudden explosion. My targets were here then. Too many guards to take out quietly. Time to make some noise. The sniper rifle rang out. Once. Twice. The third guard got off a shot, taking me in the shoulder. He paid for that shot with his life. The suit stopped the bloodflow and I made my way to the door. It opened and the officer standing on the other side lifted his sidearm and shot me in the head. Wrong. Do it again. Everything vanished in a blinding flash. When I could see again I was back at the beginning of the facility, looking in through the door. © 2016 Sargon Dorsai |
