March 13th 2008

A Chapter by Sara Elyse Abrams

March 13th 2008, the day that changed everything. Riding my bike home in the street seemed like a good idea at the time. I thought my mother was being overly cautious when she told me to never ride in the streets. Then it happened, a car came out of nowhere. The car swerved left and right as it sped down the road, twenty miles over the speed limit. I tried to peddle to the sidewalk, but the car was too fast. BANG!

I thought I had died. I did not feel any pain, so I thought the car hit me and I was in the after life. I refused to open my eyes out of fear for the mysteries that awaited me. Then I heard it. “What are you doing you stupid child? You could have been run over by that car! How many times do I have to tell you not to ride your bike in the streat? Oh, just come here, I am just happy you are alright.” my mother yelled.

Even then I knew that even if I ended up in the after life, my mother calling me stupid would not be the first thing I heard. I opened my eyes to observe my mother hurtling towards me like I was the last TV on Black Friday. I jumped off my bike and my mother hugged me until I could not breath. As I pulled away from her animal-like bear hug, I saw the wreckage. Broken glass surrounded the upside down car. The top was completely smashed in and smoke flowed out the car. Its  wheels were spinning and the headlights were flashing. There was no way that car could have flipped like that, not naturally at least. That was when I knew that something was different about me, on March 13th 2008.
