The girl about my age

The girl about my age

A Poem by Sara Elyse Abrams

I walk alone,

With a bright pink backpack,

And a blue dress,

Mama says that I can walk by myself,

Because school is only one block away,

I see a girl sitting on a bench about my age,

With a backpack and a dress,

We walked to school together,

But she never went in

I ride the bus,

With an old backpack,

And a black hoodie,

Mom says I have to ride the bus,

Because school is three miles away,

I see the girl walking down the street about my age,

With a tattered hoodie and  some old shoes,

So I get off the bus to walk to school with her,

But she never went in

I drive a car,

With a gigantic backpack taking up one seat,

And a red shirt,

Dad says I can drive his old car,

Because I need some way to get to school,

I see the girl about my age walking in the rain,

Without a coat or umbrella,

So I drive her to school,

But she never went in

I walk down the street,

With a black purse,

And a white blouse,

Dad says be careful walking down the street,

Because you don’t know what will happen,

I see the girl about my age lying down,

With a bullet in her chest and a blood stand shirt,

So I drove her to the hospital,

But never saw her come out
