I miss the world

I miss the world

A Poem by Sara Elyse Abrams

I miss going to school.

I never thought I would miss waking up at six AM.

I never thought I would miss walking up a flight of steps five times a day.

I never thought I would miss school,

But when you don’t go to school for eight months,

You tend to miss how it used to be.

I miss human contact.

I miss being able to hug my friends.

I miss holding someone's hand.

I miss high fives and sidehugs,

Shoulder touches and accidental bumps,

A touch doesn’t seem so important,

Until it's gone for months.

I miss times before Covid-19.

I never thought I would see a global pandemic.

I never thought I would see New York streets empty.

I never thought I would lose all hope.

I never thought I would see the world fall apart.

To see people kill each other because they're different.

To see the sky turn orange.

To see the world so full of hate.

Maybe the hate was always here,

Maybe a crisis really does show peoples true colors.

All I can say is that I miss the way thing used to be,

I miss the world.
