Maybe

Maybe

A Poem by Sarah Flynn

Maybe

Just maybe

She is beautiful

Because her hips sway

As her feet glide across the glimmering floor

And her breasts bounce with the vibrancy of the music

To each beat, to each note

Every part of her dances

She is beautiful

Because she cries when her husband

Slams the door for the last time

And she lies on a bed

Of half-emptied bottles

Poison to suppress her mind

She is beautiful

Because she was forced on her knees in a bathroom stall

And spit out her yellow dignity

Because she has a bruise on her neck

Where kisses destroyed her pride

Her soul is purple and blue

She is beautiful

Because she shrieked in pain as she gave life

To a daughter

Who didn’t have a father

And she drove herself home

And tried to make the girl smile

She is beautiful

Because she loses a job

When a man’s ego finds

The path up her thighs

And she remains mute

But her virtue cries

She is beautiful

Because her hips still sway

As her feet keep the rhythm

And her throat fills the room

With a tender song

And every part of her dances

To each beat, to each note

So maybe

Just maybe

She is beautiful

Wow, this is deep. Clearly, of a woman bruised and abused..still fighting to go on and put her best foot forward! This is both tragic and lovely at the same time. Thank you for sharing!
