Diamonds

This chapter describes another occasion on which things were positive between J.C. and me.

We didn't speak again until the following Monday; from Wednesday afternoon until Sunday night, he was at Mud Nationals at Tree with his buddies, and I was in Corpus Christi for a journalism convention with some of my fellow 'Pacer' staff members (Phil, Jose, and Jeremy). He actually invited me over after school that day, but by the time he did, I had already arrived home, and he pointed out that it would be wasting a lot of gas for me to turn around and drive all the way back to Lufkin. Although we didn't wind up hanging out that day, we did see each other before the end of that week...as well as several more times throughout the remainder of that month (we also texted a lot, too).

 

On April 22, he invited me to come spend the night at the apartment (even though he had to work that night)...which, as you probably already guessed, I agreed to do immediately. It started out as being similar to all of the other times that I had stayed over there by myself--I watched a little bit of TV, took a shower, and then turned on the radio and settled in to get some sleep.

 

Not more than five minutes after I decided to call it a night, I got a text from him asking me what I was doing. A few messages later, he told me that I needed to wake up because he was coming home (he had only been at work for about an hour at this point). He then told me to "look in the drawer beside the bed, there's a box in there for you."

 

I followed his instructions and located the little black box in the drawer of his bedside table. Inside that box was a gorgeous silver necklace with a heart pendant formed by diamonds of graduating sizes.

 

The way we were on that night--like the morning after we had fought because of Daniel--was, in my opinion, the best that we had been since we were still dating the previous summer. I'll be ladylike and keep the details to myself, but...well, let's just say that he really surprised me with some of the things that he did that night.
