ThirteenA Chapter by Sara“Business
partners? You work as a janitor, and Heather doesn’t have a job.” Kimberly said
frowning. “That’s my
day job, besides Heather doesn’t need a job not with what we had going on.”
Richard shrugged. “So what’s
your other job then.” Kimberly said with raised eyebrows. She could see Richard
selling drugs but not Heather. He could see Heather shoplifting but not
Richard. The two were as different as they come. “None of you
business.” “What do you
need from Heather.” “Again none
of your business.” “You’re a
jerk.” Kimberly said opening up James’ file. “And you love
me for it.” Richard said leaning back into the chair. He watched Kimberly
underline a bunch of things and then flip the page. “Kimberly,
what are you going to do when James comes through that door.” Kimberly
ignored Richard an kept on reading, underlining and flipping the page. “Seriously, do you have to have a plan.” “I do, I’m
just not going to tell you.” Kimberly said she closed the file. “By the way can
I keep these here.” She said tapping the files. “Sure. Just
don’t expect me to be here to let you in whenever you want them.” “Just tell me
where she is.” James said louder then he should. The librarian gives him a
dirty look and Heather smiles and mouths an apology. “I think we
should take this outside.” David said noticing the annoyed look of a nearby
reader. When the
three of them stepped out into the cool air, the sun was begging to set. As Heather began walking she turned to David “I need to
talk to you later, alone.” She said with a meaningful look. “Where is she
Heather?” James asked again, “And why aren’t you telling me?” “Because
Kimberly asked me not to.” Heather said walking toward the road. “You weren’t talking to Kimberly, you were talking to that creep Richard.” James said angrily trying to catch up and Heather smirked. David had given up any attempt at matching the two and their incredible walking speed. “How do you know Kimberly is safe or even with him.” James breached as he caught up to Heather. “Cause I know Richard, and he wouldn’t hurt his own cousin, not under normal circumstances.” “Wait they’re
cousins?” James asked stoping. Heather pursed her lips and turned to look him in the
eye “Yes they are.” “S**t.” James
said breathing hard. Heather nodded, “S**t is right.” “I don’t get
it.” David crossed his arms, walking up to them. “Why does that matter?” “It cause
Richard his a dick, and...” Heather began. “He’s a
blackmailer.” James finished. David stopped
and looked at James. “Does he…” “No he
doesn’t. At least I don’t think he knows.” James interrupted before he said anything in front of Heather. Heather’s
phone beeped she picked it up and shook her head with an amused smile. “James she’s on thirty-six
Humber street.” James nodded and ran off. Heather watched him until he’d turned the corner and then turned back
to David. “Where did
you get the DVD?” “What DVD?”
David asked. “Oh wait, you mean the one I left in my computer? I found it in my work bag. Why?” “You haven’t
watched it yet.” Heather adjusting her bag.
“I think it’s about time you did. Come on.” She said pulling him back to
the Library. © 2013 SaraAuthor's Note
