The Wizard Table: Chapter Four: The Interrogation roomA Chapter by SaraBenni is handcuffed to a table with evidence she was planning to take out a police officer. Is Benni's adventure over before it began?
Benni checked her watch twisting her wrists and maneuvering
around her cuffs for the fourth time. She had been sitting in the holding cell
for over two and half hour. Benni knew, of course, that they were making her waiting on
purpose; it would tier her out and be easier to interrogate. Knowing what they
were doing didn’t make in any less ineffective. Benni tries not to grind her teeth and ball up her fists;
she had not taken all the factors into account before she tried to confront
Thibault. She hadn’t predicted that her PI was a police flunky, that
Thibault had set her up or that his partner would arrest her in a place where Maddie
couldn’t intercede. The more Benni thought about it the harder she grinded her
teeth. Her fists were pale from her holding her fists so tight. The only good thing about this was that they had brought her
to the police station, rather then someplace quite where they could shoot and
bury her without anyone asking questions. It meant they were not involved, yet.
Benni still could not believe she had been such an amateur. She started
grinding her teeth again. Benni’s anger seemed to evaporate as the holding cell door
opened and her arresting detective McKinley walked in. Benni set a meek and
vulnerable expression on her face as McKinley circled around the table to sit
next to Benni. “You told me your name was Denise--” “"You can call me Deni,
Deni Hines.” Benni interrupted with an apologetic expression. “I still think
there’s some kind of mix-up.” “There isn’t.” McKinley coldly, then as though she thought
better of it she frowned. “Deni, can you tell why you think your in here for?” “That’s just it I don’t know, and I’ve been in here for
hours.” Benni pouting. “Is there someone you want to call?” “No.” Benni Deni, we know everything.” McKinley sighed like she was
talking to her teenage daughter. “We have evidence from Nelson Henderson that
you hired him to follow a detective from this department, and that you wanted
him to find a time and a place where he ‘could be approached’.” McKinley paused
for a moment watching Benni very carefully. “What do you want with detective
Thibault?” Benni waited a beat after McKinley stopped talking to
nervously look to left and frown letting her chin quiver just enough for the
detective to notice. Benni had gambled and lost, now she had to play the cards
she had. Detective Thibault and McKinley would have to enough to find Phrixus. “Henderson suggested that you were working for someone else,
is that who you’re afraid of?” McKinley’s voice had suddenly gotten softer. Benni shook her head and McKinley sighed standing up. Benni’s
hand shot up to McKinley’s shirt, where it hung. The detective sat down again
trying to catch Benni’s lowered gaze. “I have something to say about the"” Benni suddenly stopped
as though something had just a occurred to her, and that she had not used the
two hours to come up with a plan. “Go on.” McKinley said. “I’ll only talk to detective Thibault.” Benni said at last. “I’m his partner, you can tell me.” She said as Benni
frowned. “I can tell him for you, but you had him followed so I’m not
sure I want to let you see him.” McKinley said suspiciously, she made a motion
to leave but Benni stopped her again. “It’s about the case he’s working on.” Benni widened her
eyes and whispered. “Doctor Phrixus Roshan Amirmoez I think someone killed him,
and I know why.” “Okay. How do you know Doctor Amirmoez?” McKinley asked her
face was dark and unreadable. “I was doing some research and he was helping me with it.” “So Deni what did you want to tell Thibault?” “There’s this girl he was writing to. She told him she was a
kid but Dr. Amirmoez and I knew she wasn’t. Her records were perfect but the
school she said she goes to, I have a cousin who works there as a secretary
there and she said she was in the system but she never attended any classes and
no one’s ever seen her.” Benni said speaking fast, she was starting to get
tired of dragging out the whole thing. McKinley had taken out her notepad and
was taking notes. “Do you know her name?” “Eliza Simons, that’s the name she used. I have a copy of
all the letters they sent to each other. Can I see--”, Benni trailed off as
detective Thibault walked into the room. © 2013 SaraReviews
