The princess never really knew,
from the beginning,
just how to send those spiraling words
out of her mouth
and when her prince left her
the heart she was left with
had been shattered like glass,
she looked for the closest thing
that could sew it
back together
she found a maidservant,
a loyal girl who would sit
and admire the princess' life
and delicate appearance
while the princess secretly thought the same
of the maidservant.
when they sat outside together,
after the sun had found its rest,
the princess would voice their
deepest wish
that was planted
and hidden
behind reflective glass
and make-up
"I wish there were fireflies"
the maidservant was no longer a girl
after a time
and she fell in love.
the man she loved was perfect,
the princess congratulated them
with all of her re-sewn heart
but wept when she was alone
for now she knew
things would begin to change.
when the maidservant stopped visiting
the princess knew
that her friend had found
her own fireflies
to leave light
in her sparkling,
hopeful eyes.
the princess grew old,
alone in her chambers,
missing her dear maidservant
and their midnight condolences
but the princess knew
that fireflies
meant she was no longer important
one day, a panicked maid
rushed the princess's dear friend in,
glowing from head to toe
almost too bright to set eyes upon.
the princess wept as she had
the day that she knew things would change
gripping her friend
as close as she could,
she squeezed her eyes shut
and felt the body disintegrate
beneath her,
and felt the fireflies
that had infested her friend
brush past her
in a flurry of bright hope
that was too overwhelming
for one so delicate
in a world so full
of disappointments.
