Letter to a younger self

Dear Rishi/Santulan (age 16):
Yes, I know that you don’t go by the name Santulan yet but that’s the name you’re going to stick to for good. Now how do you know who I am? Well I am you, just at the age of twenty. You can tell that it is really me because I can for one tell you an incident when you were in Jaipur and you told your cousin that about the free toothbrush he was supposed to get from the store, or the 10 rupees you took and once while brushing your teeth you were playing with a blade and cut yourself bad that you made a whole mess when you were young. Or that you were singing Bailamos, Rhythm Divine and The Call on your way from the court to home when mom won the case for your custody from your uncle. Good, now I seem to have taken your attention.

Now the reason I am writing this letter is to tell you about some of the things you are going to face. No I know how you’re pissed when everyone tells you that you must concentrate on your studies and get in a good college, but and that you want to end doing computers in a decent college but at the way things will go on that is not going to place. I mean yes you’ll get in to a good college and a good faculty too but not on your terms, not totally by your choice. SO please make it a point to work that little extra hard as you missed out by just a few marks. You and I both know that how much time we have spare to do that.

Also please work out more, do some yoga and watch that extra fat you have. If you want to ask out that girl and only if you really really want to have a relationship with her then ask her out. You don’t want to end up ruminating a ‘what if’ scenario. Resume writing because we know that you’re good and you haven’t explored that side of yours for some time now. Be more grateful to people around you and try not to get in to much heated discussions with mum. Both of you’ll just end up feeling mad.

There will come times when you will stick for your friends and go against odds. You will rise but please don’t fall the way I did. Get your priorities right and you’ll be able to get all that you want.

Santulan, age 20.
