Involuntary

Involuntary

A Poem by Sandra Lynn
"

An excerpt from a psychiatric hospital stay in 2007 (I think) where I befriended a young girl who was only there because there were no available foster parents, and her parents beat her.

"
I watched you,
as you tried to sneak out behind me.
I heard the woman say
"She's trying to escape"
We had done this
a million times before.

The halls were action packed,
I was told to go to my room.
So I did, but I watched.
Four security guards,
6 feet tall, muscular
Tackled her to the ground.

I can still hear her screams,
and the noise it made when
her shoulder popped out of the join.
A syringe appears
It disappears through her jeans,
but the screaming doesn't stop.

She fights and fights,
they won't let her go.
She won't give up, so
like a potato sack they haul her
over their shoulders
to bring her to Seclusion.

I get caught opening my door,
but my nurse knew we were close.
All she can do is offer me Thorazine,
I gladly take it, and go back to my room.
The screaming now turned into
heart wrenching sobs.

I run to the washroom when I hear
her choking from crying so hard.
I vomit up the Thorazine,
and I vomit until I vomit green bile.
Suddenly, the screaming stops.
Oh, the drugs must have kicked in.

Another dose or Thorazine,
I am in another world,
but I'm schizophrenic, so,
I'm never quite in the right world.
I wouldn't know it
if I saw it.

Hours pass. Her door is closed.
I stand vigil.
Suddenly, she walks out, doped up
Just like me, but she had it worse.
Her crime: 14 years old, foster child,
she skipped school one too many times.
