Aztec Dancers

Aztec Dancers

A Poem by STurner
"

One magical day...

"

The Aztec Dancers

From the distance they did come
and embraced me in odd melody
deep resonant welcome
of the conch shell blown,
twittering notes of bamboo flute,
like so many birds in the trees,
beating of the heavy, hollowed drum
beaconing me like a pounding lonely heart,
upon the breeze.

Twirling, swirling like a whirlwind
in helm, breastplate,
and girdle
of gold, pearl and paui shell,
the three Aztec Dancers
moved as one.

Suddenly still and poised,
then crouching and leaping
in a violent ballet
with the grace of leopards
on the kill

Music lay upon my ears
but touched further down
in that silent inner man,
I wished then
that I had traveled to the ancient cities
of pyramids and gold
with Cortez and Pizarro
surrounded by lush
green foreboding forests.

My eyes filled with the glitter
of a thousand suns, but the rhythm stirred
my heart and soul.
Light shone in the primal darkness
of my inner masculine self
and I knew beyond thinking
and envisioned beyond sight
the Presence of Majesty,
Beyond the Now
Radiating outward
and calling to me
within the midst of spectacular beauty
of bronzed bodied dancers

there awakened the magic
the power and strength
of the ancient golden gods
long forgotten and
perhaps not truly understood
by the white man.

For a moment in time
or was it an eternity
on some other plane,
the air itself was electric
I was drawn into a trace
of the lonesome ones
Quetzalcoatl
Huitzilopochti
and Montecuhzuma.

It ended as quickly
as it had begun
but the rhythm
the beat, the power
the magic
yet remained and dwelt
within my awaken primal man.

Touched ever so deeply
as to never be the same
The Ancient Lonesome Ones
remain alive today
for those that have the memory
of mighty, bronzed
Aztec Dancers.
