At the guillotine

At the guillotine

A Poem by Samuel H. Ludke

I'm blinded,
I thought I would be delighted,
As I stand here ready to die,
I know where my allegiances lie,
As I lay before the guillotine,
The crowd cheering my demise on,
I know that I could have won,
I could have lived to fight another day,
My soul could have been here to stay,
As the blade swiftly cuts,
The cord is cut, no more thoughts.
