Mother

Mother

A Story by Samuel H. Ludke
"

A story about aliens!

The trees swayed back and forth like the toy ship in the bathtub. The wind howled like a whistle and the dark, but there was no fear. Not yet. All that kept the boy steady was his mom's saying:

Keep your eyes closed!

Why had always been the question. Why should he keep his eyes shut? Was it because mother was off sleeping with the town drunkards and she didn't want him to see her in the pits of her own self-loathing. He knew she would drink. She always did. Sometimes she collapsed, completely passed out from the amount of fun she had endured that night. But yet she acted stranger still. Her body shook with the intensity of a dog shaking water of his pelt. Her eyes were wide with fear.

"Honey, shut the door! Keep your eyes shut!" She always yelled and her words were slurred. Somebody must have been with her, for she kept mumbling to herself in monologues.

The boy waiting for the usual sound of love making that followed. Why did he have to sit there and listen to that hell? His ears were two small yet to take in that much information. Mother didn't care much. He listened. Nothing. Just the scraping of the long branches against the house could be heard.

Then came the scream. The horrible, shrill noise, blasted through the house with an intensity unmatched by even most actresses. The boy had been to the theater and heard many fake screams. Many seemed real. But this was pain, as if his mother was being assaulted.

The boy jumped out of the bed and scrambled to the door. His door was hot. He had rested his hand on the wood and instantly pulled it back.

"Holy sh...." It was red, but it would be alright. He decided that the metal doorknob would permanently damage his hand, so he ran to the bathroom and grabbed two of the many towels found in the cupboard. He wrapped it around his hand and opened the door.

A thick mist surrounded his figure. Walking along the endless hallway, he found his mother's room empty.

"The idiot has run off with my mother!"

The mist clouded his vision and made him cough. A metallic hissing sound could be heard downstairs.

"Where the hell am I? This hallway was never this long." The boy walked into what he guessed was a library.

"Ah, something familiar." Then, it hit him. His stomach heaved as he fell backwards. A small ripple flowed across the wall in front of him.

Welcome, please enter your pass code!

"Who is that?"

Incorrect pass code! Security protocols activated!

"Oh crap!" The boy turned and bolted back the way he came. Steam filled the hallway and his skin burned.

He screamed as he ran. His face hit the ground.

Intruder alert! Intruder Alert!

Trying to get up didn't work so well. He came face to face with the smoldering remains of a human person. Backing up screaming, he bumped into the wall, which was coming at him.

They are trying to trap me!

He jumped up and ran forward as fast as he could. The corpse behind him smiled at him as if it was telling him to be as free as he now was. The walls kept shrinking at a rapid rate. His arm that was exposed began to ache and burn. The wall is electrified! A small light could be seen in the distance. Sweat poured from every outlet on his body. Nothing mattered more than light! His legs pumped faster than ever before. At last, he was free. He instantly fell off of what looked like a cliff. Nothing could be seen except for the great white light that surrounded him.

His scream bounced off the walls and ripples flooded the walls around him.

When he landed, he was surrounded by figures. He felt their fingers grabbing his clothes and his feet being picked up. He cried out for help, but nobody even strayed. They picked him up and carried him down another hallway. This hallway was lit up with electronic consoles, buzzers, and monitors. The monitors displayed images of him running, playing, and interacting.

"Who are you? Let me go!" Their grips were strong. His legs and arms were firmly secured. He wasn't going anywhere.

Several different people could be seen ahead in the corridor.

"I know he has escaped. Remain calm please!"

MOM?

"Hey honey!" The figures carrying him dropped him in front of a crowd of people. Nothing compared to this sight. Space. A massive window allowed the boy to see the stars, and Earth in the distance.

"What do you think?"

"I think it's amazing. Mom what is this?"

"It's our research project. Earth is very interesting. So many horrible things happening in one place. That's why we were sent here you know?"

"Where's dad?"

A robotic sound could be heard from one of the corners of the room.

"Hi Son! Should we play catch?"

"Dad! What happened to you?" His father was nothing but a tangle of wires and gears with a head on top. It walked slowly, if you could call it that. His mother answered for the machine.

"He is our personal assistant. He has been since we got here. It's time you know the truth."

"What truth? What are you talking about?"

"You were grown from a small batch of chemicals and human DNA. You are a hybrid. We needed someone to place into our test chamber."

"That's what my room is? Why did you not say something? I thought I was a human child this whole time!"

Our spaceship comes fashioned with several simulation chambers. You could live every aspect of human life and I could take many different disguises on to guide you in your testing. We wanted to observe human life on Earth and replicate it up here so that could test whether or not we could walk among them."

The boys mind was swimming in disbelief. He was a lab experiment. Just a rat in a maze.

"Many aspects of human life could kill us. These induce drinking Earth's water and eating certain foods as our food is quite different where we come from. Also the humans took several test subjects we sent down to a secure facility in the desert. You could test their ways in safety."

The boy was suddenly happy. He didn't know why. His skin burned and it tickled.

"Your human body was necessary so that could study the anatomy. Your father is the first recreation of the human disguise. You were the second. Now the transformation shall begin."

The boy fell to his knees. The pain was unbearable. The fires of hell couldn't possibly compare to what he was feeling now. He felt something peeling off of his eyeballs. His eye color changed to a bright green. The contact lenses fell to the floor. He felt his true back pop through the slippery human skin. The false skin dropped to the ground as his emerald figure was revealed. His human teeth dropped out of his skull and fangs replaced them. The same happened with his nails. His hair fell out and in its place was scales and two massive horns.

"Now, come my son! The chemicals worked perfectly. You are now one of us."

The lights flashed. Everyone looked just like him. Their cloaks were gone and their emerald bodies lit up the ship.

"With your new powers, the humans will truly fear you! Go my son! Return with more information. If you wish to return to your human form, curl up into a ball. Good luck!"

The boy could be walking among us anywhere. Legends say he is still looking for test subjects to bring home to his mother. Careful, you might be next!
