dive

dive

A Poem by Sam Summers

and as everything washes around me I run my fingers through it
and the resistance keeps it from feeling like falling
and as I fall the world floats up around me and I try to catch the best bits as they pass
and I just miss the shell that looks just like your smile
(but I catch a tiny crab which tickles like your eyelashes on my palm)
and scale upon scale swims across my cheek
and it stings like the love of your warm summer hair
and the looming bed of the ocean is skin white in the light of the fading sun

still surrounded by everything I find myself surrounded by everything and you
as the sea becomes sand and the fish become sand and the crab flees the tip of my finger
and I try to catch anything any scratch of surface
and everything and you falls through me and around me
and the sand fills my skull and scratches the back of my eyes
and the sand is everything inside me and the sand is nothing real
and for seconds the sand is enough
and as I fall deeper into you the sand gives way to the nothing of clouds

and air as nothing floats up around me
and I try to catch the best birds as they pass
and I just miss the bird that looks just like your smile
and even if I caught it I’d still be falling
