A Poem by Parker Pearl
"

read my piece "requiem? absurd!" first. this is kind of a follow up.

"

just past twenty's sun
hints of twenty one
poured us into bed

i was at your best

converging our chests

inhibitions shed

but as our good day
led to good night
the rest of resting me

took phantom flight

                    what started with a kiss
                    chased by a drink...

ended in your sheets

gown well past your feet
a whisper at your mouth

your lips dropped it on mine
i spoke its encore line
"we've no future in the south"

so as better night
became last day
you missed your farewell as
last records played
                     what started with a drink
                     chased by a kiss...

ended on our hands
we started secret plans
knowing we would never write

there in my dryest drought
i helped lift your bags out
lying, swearing "we're all right"

in the throes of our
last chance at june
you'd graduate and leave
for broadway soon
                   no future in the south...
                   goddamn, you're right.

last coffee, our last call
without even withdrawal
neither of us spoke

i kind of said your name
instead reached for a flame
to light a final smoke

"our season's almost up"
you said into your cup
it makes no difference then
where we are, where we've been
you'll see your name in lights
i'll curse mine wednesday nights
at that same bar downtown
where daily i will drown
next to the seat for you
i'll save until we're through
                           counting seven months
                           out loud...

An excellent piece. Well written. The progression was perfect and the story kept my attention. Nicely done.
