Winter        by Sami Khalil

An English sonnet…

Upon a dare, Winter comes plundering

Patchwork of leaves before the frigid frost

The comfort of warm beds greets the morning

As we rise from slumber to pale dreams lost.

Some guests invite themselves into houses

As furnaces come on with clicks and hums

Gulf of branches appear where snow douses

Sturdy shoulders of hills, mansions and slums.

Winter is some peoples’ pleaser, you know

Rarely tinged with color; yet kisses sweet

Holidays, retreats, family and stars aglow

Steadfast love where mundane and sacred meet.

As for me, I’m thankful for all seasons

Made to leave us traces, imprints, reasons.

this is another hit from you. your command over the sonnet is impressive and inspires me to work on this form again (i did one, my bipolar memoir, but then just kind of forgot about it). the final couplet is absolutely amazing, and the wisdom is endaering. every season is different but each has something to show us. the ability to see clearly and appreciate what is before you is an incredible power and one essential to great poets. loved this work.
