Ode to a New Year

By Sami Khalil

An English Sonnet...

Further away the sun ambled slowly

As its lights shimmered upon rising waves

Go rushing is a sad world, so lowly

Holding the skies in check where New Year braves.

Some grow wearies from darker sense of things

While others in dreamless states do feel hope

Dangling on the edge what hostile man brings

Febrile instincts where one can grow and cope.

Hear these wise words which may preclude drifting

Circumspect that wars are oddly dreadful

Cast aside ghosts bidding on us passing

Eroding sacred belongings, droll-eyed, fretful.

Ode to new vantage points, real page-turners

Softly glow passions of astute learners.

The Doomsday Clock is one minute to midnight. Hope is a hard thing to hold when every act of mankind makes the path of truth and light more slippery and unstable. But I do hope. I hope for a wonderful year for us all. And I hope yours is the best.
