Still the Queen

Still the Queen

A Poem by Sami Khalil
"

Happens to lots of men especially in some countries... Thus is not about me, but I have seen it happens. Rejection is devastating.

"

Still the Queen                by Sami Khalil

An English Sonnet...

For days on end, I waited patiently

Dawdled I did for a timely moment

A ring in hand to offer graciously

Under a leafy tree through bestowment.

On terra-cotta tiles, your dad heard steps

Like police boots and heart roaring in fire

In his rocking wood chair, he showed biceps

As the clock melted in dreadful ire.

A resounding “No” made no sense to me

Dashing hopes when failed to impress his kind

The butter-fly flew past the glib and glee

For no bells will be heard in anchored bind.

I stood back then watching the gulf between

Till two horizons meet, you're still the queen.

Still the Queen, yes indeed as should. Whatever a person's status or being, the heart is much the same.. is what makes a human human.. what makes love and duty, trust and sincerity and all those traits that turns a person into who he or she is inside, in spirit and thought - unique. Your words could be interpreted in so many ways.. finely laid, sir.

We are taught and sometimes even trained and our appetites whetted to succeed in every endeavour, including matters of the heart, but rarely ever to navigate and survive disappointments, defeat and rejection which can be far more devastating and commonplace. If only life could be just a tad easier…. Compelling read and truths in this rich poem.

Better a queen unconquered than a willing handmaid could have been the motto of many of Elizabeth Tudor's suitors. The heartaches and rejection hurt but do not relinquish or deplenish the feelings of loyalty to love. I enjoyed the read.

Under the skin we are exactly the same in every way; so how strange it is that we have formulated so many different social beliefs, attitudes, approaches and behaviours.

Times may change, but underlying beliefs have never moved at the same speed.

i admire how the restrained and composed way you wrote this. this is an experience that one will never recover from, but the humble and often humorous way this was written shows the persona's perseverence. a tragic ending, but still quirky. it seems you haven't lost your sense of humour.

Sadly this is more common in some cultures than others Sami. I can only contemplate on how devastating this situation would be. You convey that emotion so well here. Finely penned lines. Love doesn’t always run smooth. Good to read you again dear poet.
