The power of words

"

Words                       by Sami Khalil

Words are living things

when uttered or written

from the souls; vestiges of thoughts

rising above… flooding the river banks.

Upright the wires, you see birds

watching beneath sun-draped skies.

Words hide in masquerades,

in empty basements,

preserved in burlap sacks,

sewn from quilted fabrics.

Words' exhalations must become

exaltations of space,

of studied jewels reflecting the abyss.

The seeker for them looks in private mirrors.

The driver of them counts missing passengers.

The survival by them considers crowns of new kingdoms.

The speaker in them traces jagged lines.

Words are large fields, fertile and rooted,

when harvested, they undulate with life’s arcs,

as they linger in learning.

Words can be powerful weapons.

Words can be trusted guides.

Words can be needed medicines.

Great poem, I like the line "Words' exhalations must become exaltations of space, of studied jewels reflecting the abyss." Flows very nice.

Your poem is absoultely brillant. You had me at the title - words - what poet could resist that title and held me captive through the end. I love the strength of your last three lines. Again, brilliant - but I would expect nothing less from such a talented poet. :) Julie

Thank you kindly for sharing!
where would we be without words?? Probably jumping up and down, beating our chests, grunting!! (As an aside, I think there are too many who still use this kind of "language"!!) But you Sami, are a wordsmith, crafting your words in sculptures and paintings that allow the reader to think and celebrate, to find meaning in existence, to feel, and to realize we are or can be human after all. Sometimes I find when having difficulty writing, it is not the lack of words, but that there are just too many of them. And none of them fit together coherently. You dear poet, seem to have no such trouble at all.

Sami, I think you have a Magic Pen!! I'm a bit jealous. Thanks for all the words you share with us!!

Now, Sami....

What poet could possibly resist a poem titled "Words"?
Language has become so ingrained a part of us, we cannot think, feel, or communicate without the use of words to define and relate with everything we live and do.
Try thinking without words … it's quite impossible.
Still, it's a rare occurence to come across a composition of words that so lucidly and completely describes and elucidates what they are through the power of metaphor, imagery, philosophy, emotion, rapport, empathy, and living understanding dancing between writer and reader.
This is an amazing composition, considering you've used "Words" so skillfully to convey it all through the magic of turning them into emotions, feelings, and vivid mental paintings, containing the very essences of life and breath!

A virtual masterpiece of Free Verse poetry … love the skillful clarity and presentation.
Genuinely enjoyed, Sami … thank you! ⁓ Richard🖌

I saw myself running through a field of words....being enveloped by them. Private mirrors evade me unfortunately....are you hiding them? LOL I want to "Linger in Learning" always. Without learning, we are stagnant! Your poetry is always varied and interesting. Lydi***
