Suffering

Suffering

A Poem by Sami Khalil

Suffering              by Sami Khalil

I pause to catch glimpses of passing clouds

Inching across Gentian skies and pink

Over rubble and dust, rambling white shrouds

Where aching sounds and lives lost in a blink.

I cause my wandering mind to meander

Skipping shadows casted and dreamy wings

Where blades of grass do sway and hopes clamber

Sounds of thunder and drifted lightening slings.

I spy a flock of sheep tarried, stranded

Nowhere to run from the butcher at hand

With first harvest of souls and pride branded

Reaping his hate-filled face, yielding quicksand.

I rub my eyes in disbelief wondering

How to rehearse farewell songs to suffering.

We live in a modern age where suffering just continues to abound. We have grown our world to great heights of knowledge and technology, yet still resort to basic human instincts of war to deal with grievances between people’s and countries. And it’s always the innocents that are caught in the crossfire and endure most of the suffering. We can be very cruel masters of our world and the fates of others. A very timely subject matter, Sami. You do these thoughtfully themed sonnets very well. 🙏🏻

The last line is magic. Not sure it's true meaning but for my own entertainment I'll take it to mean a final swan song in a sense. A last hurrah. Before an inevitable end

in my opinion, death is better than suffering, those white shrouds remind us of wars fought and innocents murdered.... over dusty earth where nothing grows. no life there either....and the slaughter of sheep... precious animals, minding their own business....deaht happens so quickly that there is no time for farewell songs... very deep with little grass, and only in our mind's eye....

Muchly obliged ......
Farewell song to the suffering is bold line. The images produced in this piece are unsettling and I can’t fathom the magnitude of these real life tragedies

:::::::::)))))))))))))))))
farewell song to suffering ... seems they are not meant to be ... human nature has a way with falling into fists of greed, rage, steel and cold hearts ... enough suffering to satisfy the beast one would think .. but on a positive note ... it is suffering of innocence, me thinks, that teaches us valuable lessons and changes our character ..patience, empathy and Faith can all grow when suffering begs the question "Why me?" ... and of course ... we always have war don't we :(((((((((((((((((

Can't help but think this relates to the world at present, the ongoing madness that is happening in parts that threatens to plunge us all into a dark age of war and suffering. We live in crazy times where death and suffering are being allowed to occur needlessly. We have come out of the pandemic with a touch of madness, I think. Some lovely descriptive lines used here. Aside from Shakespeare, I have never read a Sonnet, so a first for this nrwcomer to poetry.

A beautiful poem as always! I like how you wrote both a peaceful scene, alternating with something hard, like the first two lines are peaceful, like pink clouds, then the rubble and white shrouds.
