Wintering               by Sami Khalil

She would sit in

the dim light,

to undress the last vibes

of the night;

to improve

her unflattering

language skills.

During the day,

she painted what she saw,

at face-value,

clashing with colours,

abrasive textures of humans.

She sipped on finest teas,

read Shakespeare with affectation,

dragging herself into slow motions,

vanishing into depths,

no sonars can fathom.

From a moving target,

to a personal narrative,

She eased herself

into wintering.

Her grit hushed

the mystic wombs;

the loud voices of the marginalized.

Sudden gusts still

rattle, on occasions,

the screen door of her mind.

These lines speak to me of an elderly person in the winter of her life contemplating the voices of the marginalized which play deeply on her mind. A fine character sketch here Sami. Hope you are having a good Sunday.

This character sketch is fine writing. The subject seems to be one who is moving into old age, who may have been something of a social critic in earlier times. The impression is that she was quite frank in the past, showed that frankness in her art. Now, however, the years have reduced her capacity to speak out, though she apparently does so on occasion. This one belongs in a journal.

the language of art...many forms, we could see her as not being human---too caring, too soft, too full of love to face the winters that humans bring to themselves with their abrasive egos and indifference to each other, which is much like a cold winter morning.
She is for me likened to Ophelia....
too much love to survive in a world of treachery.
