The Statue Of...
     by Sami Khalil

She stands...a torch in hand, mightily proud,
weathering teeming shores and elements,
bearing...broken shackles, greatly unbowed,
heralding freedom's light and monuments.

A glamorous lady... of timeless states,
deemed of words fitting her self's greatest stride,
barren not of our Fathers' advocates,
for none can denigrate duly noted bride.

She stands...at the crossroads of history,
fiercely pleasing souls who long for freedom,
with golden dawns ushering in mystery,
and haloed tales bejeweling bright queendom.

She survives...by the unseen hands, somber,
mourning veterans who abide earthly slumber.

She represents freedom and long may she do so. Certainly there are many who would like to see the end of democracy. There have been many who have sacrificed their lives fighting for it and we owe them so much. So well penned is your sonnet Sami. It is always such a pleasure to read your work.

A joy to read from the many poets I admire here at the Cafe. When I was young I often wondered why the statue of liberty was female, as well as Lady justice. Than I began to live in a world where men would war and hate. Our greater virtues represent our greater aspirations and love. Qualities that define a creators intentions toward their children. Only a creator of life can truly understand these virtues of a greater love. Because they carry within them the seed of hope.
