It is lonely at the top               by Sami Khalil

It is lonely at the top;

A marbled mausoleum.

Somethings of worth,

someone of regard,

carrying histories,

precious crowns,

begging questions;

busy chatter spent

admiring autopsies…

times before roosters

awaken the happy hour,

the prior misguided lies

between us;

namesakes of gods we choose,

among our fenced imaginations.

The way of the flames is evident.

The way of ashes is tricky.

For odes to the mountains,

audiences gawk at the jagged peaks,

the highest prices paid for the vistas.

It is truly lonely at the top!

I find life in the valleys.

I wonder if it's lonely at the top, I guess you'd have to step on a lot of toes to get there but going down you see everyone you left behind and you're 6 feet under, you write made think of that scripture in the bible the valley of the shadow of death but if we reach it before we see it there's still hope.it probably not what you meant but it's what I saw. I love reading your work because I may be wrong but it still gives me a different view.

No fun at the top, distant from everyone else. My place is in the valleys. Grounded, rather than head in clouds. Very well penned Sami. Sending you all good wishes my friend. Keep well and happy. Your work is always a pleasure to visit.

This reminded me of a saying. There are many paths to the top of the mountain but the view is always the same. I know this doesn’t really apply to this write but on reading I remembered it triggered by a few key words. Nice write Wise King Sami, the slayer of lies, the promoter of truth.

Sami,
Thanks for this piece. I find my place more comfortable in the valley as well. My class and I were discussing the story "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker. We talked about heritage and roots and how important they are to embrace. Then we always have something to fall back on.
We might be wise not to forget where we came from...yes, we might just be.
really exceptional poem.
