Hope Springs Eternal

Hope Springs Eternal

A Poem by Sami Khalil

Hope Springs Eternal         by Sami Khalil

And Lo! Behold as I gasp for quick breath

While chest burning the late hours of midnight

Thinking of love and the softness of death

Urges of heart and bodies comfort us might.

For what never returns becomes estranged

Gazing out of arms reach into darkness

Finding vacant workshops of the deranged

The gentle space of minds dwelling soreness.

The mills have gone, no one shed to be found

The tick of clocks slowed to a mere dismay

Can’t find buried treasures, neither a sound

This olden craft sailed bereft a delay.

And though life’s turbulent courses abound

Own hope as such the dappled lights astound.

I'm not a fan of form as I have neither the patience nor skills to attempt anything but simple.
This reads very well Sami with the second verse being my favourite.

Hey there my old friend...long time no see. But happily, when I pop back in you have something posted that was definitely worth the time I missed. Beautifully done. Sonnets are not easy but you sure made it look like it was.

Indeed, indeed, throughout the generations, even if or when mountains collapse, just a shrink of light gives rise to hope, and where there's hope, there is always cause for optimism...

' And though life’s turbulent courses abound

Own hope as such the dappled lights astound. ' .... sonnet superb!!

Went to visit, did not find a new post yet. Will wait Tom.
indeed it does. so much packed into this piece. you take us from the darkness of despair to the "astounding" light of hope. wording, format, emotion and truth so masterfully woven. not easily forgotten. i was immediately picked up after reading. bravo, wow ... :)

What a lovely sonnet this is, Sami! "What never returns becomes estranged" indeed, after a long separation, we are estranged from those we used to be close with. The clock ticks and will not wait, will it? So very lovely. Lydi**

I am just not a fan of sonnets....but I am a fan of this one...it is so natural sounding...no contrived rhymes, no contrived anything...just a rhythmic breath that I caught and enjoyed.

Yes, as Alexander Pope said: "Hope springs eternal in the human breast." A beautifully expressed sonnet, Sami, with one delightful turn of phrase after another! I particularly love the lines: "For what never returns becomes estranged" and "The tick of clocks slowed to a mere dismay." Wonderful writing, as ever, dear Sami!
