Barber Shop

Barber Shop

A Poem by Sami Khalil
"

Losing your hair has many effects, even psychological... This poem highlights the reality of losing something(could be part of your identity). Also, the fear of losing something gradually.

Barber Shop                by Sami Khalil

I have no superfluous hair to spare;

No neat and dapper haircuts with flair.

My salt and pepper strands have

turned into a ghost,

a tonsorial joint phenomenon,

no way to modulate its length.

Bemused watchers soon realize,

I’m Bald!

It sends shock waves to their skulls

crowned by a hallmark, genetic vitality.

I’m disappointed my hair ‘mine’ dried up;

my childhood openness to life fizzled out.

Can’t gain any traction in this world.

I think it diminished my sex appeal.

I can’t fathom this phantom.

I’m breaking down by a victim mentality.

I think there is always an act of digestion

Before the indigestion, after the fact.

I salute you barber shop, salute your colored pole,

for you carry the vestigial remnant of my old self.

"Next, please!"

i join you in your salute. you remind of a sad reality - i mourn for the hair i've lost and the grey that remains (what there is of it). what happened to my thick, wavy, jet-black locks? this has nostalgic strands running through it. i long for the smell and sounds of the barbershop. the casual banter and click of the shears. nice trim and humor ... :)

p.s.

i still watch the andy griffith show where they frequent floyd's barber shop.

I had a bad experience at a barbershop back when I was a child in the 70's. The man was drunk using a straight razor on the back of my neck and sliced me. My father thought it was funny and laughed because he didn't have to pay the man who was remorseful for what happened. I cut my own now very short, at least what hair I have left. People think I'm in the military because of how short I cut it. I liked this poem of yours my friend.

Like looking at a picture of your younger self and then looking in the mirror at your present self. From wrinkles to hair thinning losing vitality. But like with a lot of things with time and age it becomes better. So let the wind blow over your scalp haha. Wonderfully written for those balding with grace or choose to go bald because a head full of hair isn’t for all of us haha.

Very cute, Sami. I don't think bald men are any less sexy than hirsute men. Look at some of the most famous men....the Rock, Yul Brynner, etc. This is a cute way to say you are bald. No more need to see the barber. Love the artwork. Lydi**

Ah, yes, the great tonsorial retreat. I've still got most of mine, but it's drawing back over my temples like Napoleon trying to get out of Russia. Don't worry about baldness; there is something deeply sad about comb overs.

Yul Brunner looked great being bald as does Bruce Willis. I've lost a lot of my hair but doesn't bother me. It happens. Nice intelligent writing as always King Sami the brave.
