Barber Shop

Barber Shop

A Poem by Sami Khalil
"

Losing your hair has many effects, even psychological... This poem highlights the reality of losing something(could be part of your identity). Also, the fear of losing something gradually.

Barber Shop                by Sami Khalil

I have no superfluous hair to spare;

No neat and dapper haircuts with flair.

My salt and pepper strands have

turned into a ghost,

a tonsorial joint phenomenon,

no way to modulate its length.

Bemused watchers soon realize,

I’m Bald!

It sends shock waves to their skulls

crowned by a hallmark, genetic vitality.

I’m disappointed my hair ‘mine’ dried up;

my childhood openness to life fizzled out.

Can’t gain any traction in this world.

I think it diminished my sex appeal.

I can’t fathom this phantom.

I’m breaking down by a victim mentality.

I think there is always an act of digestion

Before the indigestion, after the fact.

I salute you barber shop, salute your colored pole,

for you carry the vestigial remnant of my old self.

"Next, please!"

You're very welcome!
This is so cool, Sami.

I always comment to my barber when she is done...how come my hair is still silver?

I thought you would just leave the black ones.
Very amusing piece...as the Beatles sang...
"the barber showing photographs, of every head he's had the pleasure to know, and all the people that come and go, stop and say hello"---

Hehehe! I'm so glad you were entertained. Thank you so much for the time and effort.
This was by turns amusing and hilarious! I tell myself things could be worse. Some people have hair that turns gray. I have hair that turns loose. ;) Well, you may be loosing your hair but certainly not your wit and of the two, I'd certainly prefer to keep the latter more. This read was just so much fun. Thanks for the chuckle this morning. F.

The first line made me chuckle with the "spare" word. There are people that cut their hair for wigs and such, you made me think. It's interesting. Not every one loses their hair even when they grow old. I knew older ones that had a full head of hair and even babies born with hair, yet there are those that loses their hair. Nicely written poem. Makes me think. Enjoyed the read. Tyfs

This is wonderful, I loved how you ended this write,
it reminded of times when I used to go outside of the barber shops
and play checkers with men waiting to get their hair cut.
So nicely written

You are welcome.
I think of Yul Brynner in The King and I … It is true that his sensuality was in his Smile and persuasion… no soft strands of silver or gold were needed when he danced with Deborah Kerr and he truly won her 💜 heart… Amen… Pat

You do a nice job of equating hair/hair loss with life virility, your choice of metaphor definitely makes you a wordsmith coupled with a bit of light heartedness. Well penned
