Merry-Go-Round        by Sami Khalil

A dream of reality

Roundabout merry the merry-go-round

Painted horses galloped breathless without

I sprawled under the carnival’s playground

With whoops and yells and paled faces in doubt.

Like a thunderclap, I watched the grizzled hairs

Breathing their sighs as high tempo ran through

They wondered how foolish those lad’s affairs

Born frail, riding steady bravery’s debut.

With aplomb, I kept waving at the crowd

Ships in the distance appeared indistinct

I groped for my spectacles while unbound

Across morose, slack smiles, placidly succinct.

Roundabout merry the merry-go-round

A recurring dream boomeranged my ground.

I enjoyed reading your sonnet. I wrote a piece with the same title years ago but I dug it out just now and reposted it if you'd care to give it a look. The pieces have nothing in common but the subject matter but it's interesting how we each took our initial impressions in different directions. I don't write in form intentionally so there'll be no sonnets from me but I still enjoyed reading yours. Great stuff! F.

A amazing, brilliant piece! I love the way this was written and each word used added on and on to the poem while fitting in. The imagery and rhyming and everything you do with this piece is just perfect and evokes a feeling of nostalgia while being bright and whimsical. Thank you for sharing!

Way to go Sami... A terrific Elizabethan Sonnet. Your imagery was vivid and your rhyming ... perfect. Especially debut-through and the near rhyme: crowd-unbound. One minor critique, "woop"...should be "whoop", unless "woop" is the old english way of spelling it. Great job, though. I enjoyed it immensely.

i think we all have a childhood memory of it - to this day, i can't walk past one without smiling and reveling at the sight of parents with their little ones. the expressions on little faces are priceless.

hmmm the grizzled hairs grabs my attention sir ... as do the ships and morose smiles .. this really intrigues me sir! the Merry-Go- round a place to test the young knights and lady fairs .. how could such a slow repetitive ride be so thrilling and daring .. and ohhhhhhhhhh to grab that gold ring!!! your poem has turned my heart first back to being 6 yrs old or so and at the same time .. an old man thinking back through pained pages in life's review ... some disappointments .. so loss of that inner child .. super work with contrasts says i ... deeply emotive in the closing .. thanks for sharing sir!
