White Flowers                     by Sami Khalil

It was high noon. A tepid wind blew across the purple Wisteria bending in summer fields. There was a sense of peace as I placed flowers on my mother’s grave. My dad had just passed before two years to date. My knees were quite weakened as my thoughts deepened in reflections and prayer.

I needed some closure and strength, so I felt like tuning my inner guitar to play with its broken strings this binding love for her.

This was an open altar; a place to honor the departed who lost no invitation to be inducted. I proceeded to place my tall white roses upon the grave; the ones I arranged with my creative flare. Angels floated by, mixing with some cirrus clouds over and above.

And so here, separated yet all together, head on her sweet breast, I uttered:

“Mom! There were those endearing moments we shared

There were those hands that selflessly cared

There was your spark of light, brought forth

Always, new beginnings of life with hope paired

There was you! Multitude of thoughts…

The Cherry blossoms of spring

Faces finding smiles midst the war

Looking to escape death and mayhem

There were the foghorns you generously shared

To be safe when I left home at age twenty-one

The dead silence that followed the heartbreaks

The colourful butterflies alight on sunset shadows

There was your wonder, your passions, your ecstasy never surrendered

There was your love in perfect harmony midst my agony.

For me it's been years as well, every time I visit my parents grave, I always bought two candles with two set of flowers for each one. It's lonesome without them now, but I rather let them go than suffer more of the sickness that struck them. My memories fade but the love and care they given us remains forever in our heart.. Brother it's been long... And this piece brings memories of my loved once.. I hope ur doing much better, take care and I'll always remember a brother here in wc...

Lovely and heartfelt poem. I like the almost casual way it starts, and then the imagery starts to enter in and those difficult to describe emotions of loss are enhanced in power. Nice to see u posting on the site often. It's been quite a few years since I joined, and I've been gone at long stretches, but I recall u were one of the first friends on here. It is great that you continue to write.

sometimes better to say nothing, express nothing... when words are as genuine, as heavenly, as real and true as yours here dearest Sami, your words are beyond words, your written song is beyond something for our ears to hear, but it's heard by hearts. gorgeous, your mom is blessed and proud watching her son from above being this loving and fine human being. Bless You my gentle wonderful friend~

Oh, Sami, this is so beautiful...so emotional. I bring flowers to my parents' grave frequently. I "talk" to them and tell hem what is going on in my life. Yes, there are tears too, but the memories are sweet because I was so lucky to have the parents I did. This poem is so touching. Lydi**
