I Look Back                 By Sami Khalil

-I look back-In the fading light

To a thousand memories deep

Some loomed but never escaped

Some wandered aimlessly in my sleep.

-I look back-with a longing gaze

Things lay muted as banners high

Things lay dislocated from life’s coeval clangor

Drifting as the night draws on nigh.

-I look back-beyond mortal things

Shamed by wordless waves

Joyed by the bleared emptiness

Of wounded hearts, sallow, nameless graves.

-I look back-cherishing what is inside

Trapped in a barbwire fence

Fortunes take me admittedly right

Misfortunes take me left thence.

-I look back-in the fading light

To a thousand memories deep

I feel the rush of the wind

The past I sowed, the present I reap.

in the middle of your poem You turned it from being personal to worldly, all humans have different experiences but also we all share some things the same, like the past and the present, birth and death, we all have been or will be there. I feel your soft and sad tune, it feels as if You are lying singing these words in your head and to the walls around You. wishing You peace always~

Wow! Beautifully said and magically rendered. Thank you for sharing and visiting. Rich blessings.
If one can look back one is still alive. Looking back is the essence of having lived. Another gem from King Sami.

I believe Sami, all of us will find a dead-end.

The above lines. I know. One day, we awake and we know. Maybe we didn't do enough? Thank you my friend for sharing the outstanding poetry.

what an amazing poem, Sami. Filled with so much wisdom and soul searching as well. It reminds me of memories that I myself look back on. The best stories and poetry should always engage the reader, so that they recognize a piece of themselves in the words. Your poem did just that for me. Thank you for sharing these beautiful words for us to read.

Looking back is a natural thing to do. I personally think it can put things into perspective. It allows us to weigh up situations at times on our journey. We all make mistakes. The importance is to learn from them and not beat ourselves up about things that are done and dusted. We can resolve to do better and with the passing years ensure that the time we have got left will be looked on as a good harvest. Wonderful poetry Sami. Fabulous poetic expression in your lines.

dear Sami... “The past I sowed.. the present I reap”.
Yes, Our Intentions are always wrapped in silver linings.
We are not Perfect.. however, we understand our past and
Have a chance to make amends. Kindness given and received is the best of our Nature. Forgiveness to others and ourself is difficult, but not impossible. We were once flowers in bloom... we can be reborn. 🙏 Amen. truly, Pat

To me, the best part of this poem is how, every time you repeat the refrain "I look back" . . . a phrase which morphs a little with each statement of it (which I very much prefer to straight repetition) . . . the lines that follow "I look back" seem to grow sharper & sharper in focus as your poem goes on. A little vague & esoteric at first, but gradually more & more specific & compelling. I love how you look back beyond mortal things. Many humans are transfixed on whatever grief is of the moment, but not seeing the bigger picture of the many global griefs inflicted on humanity over time. There's so much more to your meaning than meets the eye. Love seeing poetry from you for a refreshing change! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
