Ariela                                               by Sami Khalil

Based on a true story of a couple I know…

She felt the scalding. Her feelings were half-baked in the sun. You know, some serious relationships have no punchlines, but lovers become the laughing stock of fools’ scoffing.

Some tune it all out with a plastic smile, a fake facade, in order to forget the heartaches, the triggers heralding bullets fired in rapid succession, with the loudest bangs.

She felt knocked down, pushed around, a worthless pawn in a dangerous game. The grounds were cold, the places so distant. Tears kept coming down delicately. Does Mother Earth feel the pain and pangs of the Willow tree?

Soft and fragile, she experienced the great divide, the nightmares adjacent to dreams, the Neverland vs. the dreamscape’s sand. Oh, the truth can be a crowned jewel, but when tested and tasted, some minds become unhinged with either lies or perversion.

“He does not love me,” she kept saying. “He does not want to marry me.” For marriage is that promised land where ballerinas dance spellbound, gazing deeply at the bewitching hours.

She sensed falling through the cracks of age, cowering in self-tragedy in her utter frustration. She even could not smell the scent of roses in her garden but endured the mud beneath her feet.

Some nights she dreamt of being on a merry-go-round, others on a flying carpet, but lately as a runaway slave haunted by the past and lonely sighs of freedom.

She had to close the chapter of this book, to leave the fairy tales behind, to shut the blinds of perfect windows.

With sorrowful lips, she kissed his picture, set it on fire by burning it in the fireplace, releasing her caged feelings once and for all. There were no love lost eulogies to cauterize her wounds.

The writings on the wall manifested those naked truths, with shimmering audacity.

“If life escapes us, then love must too, around the bend.”

This feels like a far-away fuzzy make-believe depiction (ironic?) meant to symbolize something from today's world which might actually be harshly vivid & stark. In the past month, I've been "hit on" by seemingly successful & reasonable men my age (60's) who are so f*****g condescending in the way they speak down to me (texting), it makes me wonder how many women must be out there sucking up this s**t from men, taking their built-in assumption that their time is more valuable so they don't have to bother with basic human decency, like respecting a person. This depiction of yours is what I picture to be the type of woman who tolerates this from a man. And there must be lots of them out there becuz men act like treating women this way is perfectly acceptable. Sorry for going off. It's a compliment to how provocative your writing is (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Nicely written sir, fear of dying alone, it all grabs at us! Aah love, it turns one into a spectacle!
"Oh, the truth can be a crowned jewel, but when tested and tasted, some minds become unhinged with either lies or perversion." Indeed. "Lovers become the laughing stock of fools’ scoffing." Seen so many cases of this. It can become quite difficult to tune this out, and to love again after one's heart is broken is the most difficult thing. All in all, this was a really good read, it read like poetry!

"For marriage is that promised land where ballerinas dance spellbound, gazing deeply at the bewitching hours." That is what so many young girls think is true. That is, till they marry the man they think is their Prince Charming. You always have a twist ending that is a bit eerie.....she burned his picture, but I have a feeling she might go after him and burn down his house too! Great story, Sami. Lydi**

Sami’s latest story, Ariela, is my favorite. I love the nuanced phrasing, with striking imagery of empathy and compassion for another’s emotional struggle. The he vocabulary is wonderfully absent of any awkward, thesaurus-thumping phrases. It flowed smoothly, and a pleasure to read.👍👍
