The New Year   by Sami Khalil

A positive message

The New Year peeks through shortening shadows, through the begrudgery of youthfulness.

Seldom we see the imposter within us, striking poses, or the critic, who is kept at bay.

Time sits in judgement while nobody listens to its mutterings.

Seldom we hear the susurrus of tides, ebbing and flowing.

The New Year peeks through a prism of jaundiced eyes, berating our blend of memories; those rambling attics.

Same suits are worn for different occasions, same roads are traversed towards dead ends.

For what is the real name we give old wounds against the emptiness of sunniest days, against the tyranny of dividing walls?

We are bound in spirit, not in the print or manifestos of dirty truths. We are the beggars trawling through the old bones, the detritus of the past, salvaging what we can; broken selves and promises.

There is nothing gained in failed revolutions, in biting tongues of injustice. Home is victory where the fight and cargo belong, the gossip of withheld truths, the fecundity of its spinning windmills.

The New Year peeks through the thresholds of silence, the ticking of grandfather clocks. It is time to reshuffle the cards, to turn the tides, to recover lost bags, to rearrange the attics, in wit and wisdom.

If bodies can heal, spirits can too, along invisible paths of sand and gravel, vines and weeds.

Turn the key; the New Year is wide open. Peek though!

"It is time to reshuffle the cards, to turn the tides, to recover lost bags, to rearrange the attics, in wit and wisdom" the introduction of this line was superb, it made it for me. Vivid and grand imagination and thoughtfulness were put into this great poem and I could visualize it. Well-written - bblessed.

If only we would realize this binding and yet find freedom that with that connection there can be safety in universal care. Fantastic write, Sami.

This does not sound or feel like a positive message to me, but I like it that way. This feels like the height of cynicism, which is what many are feeling lately, & I also detect a hint of spoofing on the ridiculous human habit of acting like a new year means jack s**t. What I find positive about your message seems to be in an invitation to put away our pie-in-the-sky expectations & just take life as it comes. Good or bad, it's never dull! *wink! wink!* Thanks for a great year reading you & discussing our writings! Hope we have more fun to come in 2020! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
